The World’s Cleanest Water is Under Imminent Threat and Time to Act is Running Out
As most residents of Simcoe County are certainly aware, the region is uniquely blessed with what have been deemed the cleanest water sources in the world according to research conducted by Dr. Ian Clark groundwater geochemical expert of the University of Ottawa, Dr. William Shotyck of the University of Alberta, John Cherry Distinguished Professor Emeritus, Hydrology at the University of Waterloo, and Dr. Michael Powell, adjunct Professor at the Department of Renewable Resources at the University of Alberta.
Doubtless you’re also aware that the Teedon Pit at the Waverley uplands aggregate activities have put the purity of this water in jeopardy. Where the Ford government accelerated the threat to the water early in the pandemic by putting in Covid legislation to ‘cut red tape’ it effectively removed environmental oversight and aggregate organizations and developers began acting with impunity. Since then, there have been a number of small victories won by those fighting on behalf of the water as the Covid laws were repealed and many of the oversights reestablished and in April, applications for license to withdraw millions of litres of water to wash extracted gravel were appealed. These victories, however, have recently been undone. Activities to push ahead with accelerated development threaten the water used by local populations as life sustaining necessity and seriously compromise the benchmarks used for global scientific research .
To address this, Dr. William Shotyck and Dr. Mike Powell will be speaking to the issues and clarifying what’s at stake in an online forum at 5 o’clock on Wednesday, May 19th (this Wednesday). We’d like to encourage you to join through the following:
